Architectural Construction
Fiscal 2007 saw another successive year of orders and steady sales for Shimizu in Asia, with continued investment by Japanese manufacturing companies and real estate investment by local developers in the region.

Singapore has continued to be our main overseas market over the decades, and in fiscal 2007 Shimizu’s orders grew even higher, securing a series of mega-projects such as the Mapletree Business City and the Scotts Square Project. These projects will add to our long list of iconic projects completed in Singapore, exemplified by the soon-to-be-finished Fusionopolis @ One-North.

Subsidiaries in China and Thailand both continued to enjoy strong operations, predominantly in connection with Japanese manufacturing companies. Our operations also grew in Vietnam, which is increasingly becoming another important location in our clients’ investment portfolios.

In an attempt to broaden the sphere of our Asian market, we launched our India Office last year, which successfully led to winning the order for and commencing the GAPAI Press Molding Factory Project located in the suburb of New Delhi. India, as an important emerging market, will be among the countries we will keep a close eye on.

In the Middle East, we are seeking to realize further business opportunities in Dubai, U.A.E .where the construction of our mega-residential project is in full swing.

The year also saw the consecutive completions of numerous projects related to the Sharp Poland LCD factory, mainly in connection with their suppliers: a great boost to our total sales.

Shimizu North America LLC, our operating arm in U.S. and Mexico, boasts the largest local market share in the field of factory construction for Japanese manufacturing companies, and holds a bright outlook for new contracts to continue in the foreseeable future.

Civil Engineering
The 2007 fiscal year has continued to be a busy period for Shimizu’s overseas civil engineering operations. New project awards were up 90% from the previous year to ¥43.5 billion. This was mainly achieved by securing contracts for large-scale infrastructure projects in each of our targeted regions of the globe. In the UAE, as a result of the efforts made by new regional headquarters in Dubai which was established in April 2007 Shimizu was awarded a major intersection and road widening project for one of Dubai’s main highways. In Singapore, we were awarded a design & build contract for the extension of the Downtown Line of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, which is to be constructed using shield tunneling technology. A further MRT related contract was secured in Taiwan, comprising a system of tunnel and viaduct sections which will eventually connect Taoyuan International Airport with the city of Taipei. Additional orders have been won for multiple petrochemical plant projects on Jurong Island, Singapore, which have further strengthened our competitive presence in the field of such civil engineering works for plants.

Net sales for fiscal 2007 rose to ¥41.3 billion. Of the projects finished in fiscal 2007, the highlights were the successful completion of three major projects financed under the Japanese Yen Loan Program. These were a major sewage treatment plant project in Malaysia (see the box column below ) , and the New lloilo Airport Development and the Subic Bay Port Development Project, both in the Philippines. Each of these projects is aimed to support the enhancement of the socio-economic conditions of the respective countries.

Other completed projects included a subway tunnel construction project in Taiwan, petrochemical plant projects in Singapore and a water supply scheme in Rwanda.
Shimizu continues to selectively pursue opportunities within our targeted market sectors in and around our strategic business bases worldwide, aimed at undertaking relatively large scale projects involving high-profile technical challenges, thereby continuing to utilize and increase the operational strengths of our planning, design and construction management capabilities.
