【Introduction of the project】
This project is the reconstruction of the existing Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) on the site of the Ministry of Finance of Thailand in the center of Bangkok, Thailand. The existing QSNCC was Thailand's first multi-purpose convention center and had been a landmark in the country, hosting international-level conferences for about 30 years. Due to its aging, and for the efficient use of the site, the existing building was demolished in September 2019, and the construction of the new main building began in January 2020. The reconstruction project was launched with the aim of hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting being held in November 2022.
An overall construction plan was developed to complete the largest convention center in Thailand (total floor area of approximately 290,000 m2 with two underground levels, and three above-ground levels) having a double-level exhibition hall in the center with a maximum 110 m x 198 m column-free space on the top floor and over 50 large and small conference rooms on the perimeter area in a short period of 32.5 months. The construction schedule was shortened by constructing the center part structure including the basement level concurrently with the large main roof structure above the central exhibition hall's column-free space adopting the sliding construction method after constructing the perimeter structure from the basement to the ground level.
During the construction period, the project was delayed due to the government's order to close the workers' dormitories and construction sites and to restrict the movement of workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the project was completed on schedule thanks to the successful implementation of thorough quarantine measures, improvement on the sliding steps for the large roof, and the adoption of labor-saving construction methods. In November 2022, the Thailand APEC meeting was successfully held with the participation of more than 5,000 heads of state and other related parties.
