【Introduction of the project】
The National Road No.5 of the Kingdom of Cambodia, part of the Asian Highway 1 and the Southern Economic Corridor that connects logistic flows between Thailand and Viet Nam and supports economy of Cambodia, is the most important road.
The road had been previously paved by double bituminous surface treatment (DBST) thanks to Asia Development Bank as part of restoration from civil war. However, the surface of the road was deteriorated due to passage of overloaded vehicles, deterioration by aging, and frequent flooding in the rainy season, and therefore the road was in a dangerous condition. Moreover, living conditions of citizens residing roadside were also severely affected by the dust generated from the road.
This project aimed to improve the 366 km-long road from Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, to Poi Pet, a city of Cambodia-Thailand border, by dividing the road into nine sections so that the road is expanded from double lane to four-lane road. The project also aimed to pave the road by asphalt, construct medians, and install guardrails to improve traveling performance and safety of a vehicle for the prevention of traffic accidents and improvement of living conditions of citizens living in the vicinity of the road.
JV carried out construction of CP1 of the North section, a 46.27 km-long section of a 84 km road between Battambang and Sri Sophorn, including a bypass in the urban area (23.92 km) in four and a half years.
During the construction works, we faced difficulties such as COVID-19 and floods. However, thanks to the wisdom of local staff and partner companies, we managed to overcome them by originality and ingenuity.
The CP1 of the North section was handed over in September 2021. The improved road is highly appreciated by the Employer and users, because conventionally, it took two hours to travel this section but after the completion of the works, that time is shortened to almost a half.
It would also be our pleasure if we could raise local staff and transfer technique to them and contribute to the development of Cambodia through this project.
