【Introduction of the project】
The Yangon–Mandalay Railway Line, which runs through the central plains of Myanmar, is approximately 620 km long. It was built and operated during the British colonial era, but due to insufficient maintenance and management, the aging of railway-related facilities and equipment has caused reduced train speeds, delays, and derailment accidents, making safe and stable train operations difficult.
This project, supported by Japan, aimed to enhance railway transportation capacity and contribute to the country’s economic development by renovating deteriorated facilities and equipment along the existing railway line and procuring new rolling stock.
Phase 1 covered about 260 km from Yangon and was divided into three contract packages. Our company was responsible for civil engineering and building works in CP101, the section closest to Yangon, which spans approximately 71 km.
From the preparatory stage, the project faced numerous challenges. For example, in Myanmar, it was difficult to arrange specialized machinery for large track works, so we had to import equipment from Japan or other countries. Furthermore, during actual work, operations had to continue alongside the existing railway line, requiring detailed coordination with the track maintenance department.
Additionally, during the construction period, the project was adversely affected by the spread of COVID-19 and the state of emergency declared by the Myanmar military, resulting in work suspensions and restrictions on movement.
Despite these significant constraints and challenges, under the mission of opening a railway desired by the region, we successfully delivered high-quality work and completed the handover in 2024.
