【Introduction of the project】
This project is a new state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing factory of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), one of the world’s leading global semiconductor foundries, in Pasir Ris, northeastern Singapore. The facility is scheduled to commence mass production in 2026, bringing UMC’s total wafer production capacity in Singapore to more than 1 million wafers annually. This new factory closely aligns with the Singapore government’s vision to become a leading advanced manufacturing hub. It will be one of the most advanced semiconductor foundries in Singapore, manufacturing semiconductors to enable communications, Internet of Things (IoT), automotive, and AI innovations.
The greatest challenge in constructing this project̶Singapore’s largest semiconductor factory, comprising seven buildings and a gas plant with a total floor area of 330,000 square meters̶was the extremely short construction period of just 22 months. Additionally, numerous difficult conditions existed: starting construction with virtually no lead time after awarded; implementing a fast-track approach where basic design, detailed design, shop drawings, and construction works proceeded in parallel; the necessity of measures to suppress vibration and volatile organic compounds that could disrupt production activities in the existing operational factory; and the imperative to consider noise levels for residents in the adjacent apartment complexes. We overcame these challenges through the use of large-scale steel trusses, adoption of a full precast concrete construction method, safety management utilizing ICT technology, and thorough noise control measures for the neighbourhood, enabling 24/7  construction throughout the year. This resulted in achieving the high quality required for large-scale clean rooms, an excellent safety record, and delivery in just 20.5 months̶even shorter than the 22-month target. The opening ceremony was successfully held on April 1, 2025, with the attendance of Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and numerous other government officials.
