【Introduction of the project】

The Thomson Line, the 6th Mass Rapid Transit line in Singapore, is approximately 30km long and consists of 25 projects including 22 underground stations. The Thomson Line was further extended to the East Coast and called Thomson - East Coast Line (TEL).
The TEL runs along a combined north–south and east–west corridor, starting in the north at Woodlands town, passing through Upper Thomson before heading south to Orchard Road and Marina Bay, then running eastwards along the East Coast through Kallang, Marine Parade and Bedok South, before ending at Upper East Coast.
The TEL is currently being opened in 5 stages, with Stage 1 (from Woodlands North to Wood-lands South) opened in January 2020, Stage 2 (from Springleaf to Caldecott) opened in August 2021 and Stage 3 (from Caldecott to Gardens by the Bay) opened in November 2022.
The TEL Upper Thomson Station and its associated tunnels construction works have been awarded to Sato Kogyo (S) Pte Ltd in November 2013. This project consists of one underground station, one launching shaft and twin bored tunnels (total length 3.8km) to the adjacent Caldecott Station. The underground station was constructed by Top-Down Method under several severe conditions such as close proximity to old residential houses on shallow foundation, limited narrow working space, numerous underground utilities and adjacent to heavy traffic road.
The twin bored tunnels were constructed with 3 Slurry TBM for 4 tunnel drives and 5 cross passages were constructed by NATM. The geological profile of the tunnel was Mixed Face consisting of Kallang Formation and Weathered to Fresh Bukit Timah Granite.
During the construction, we have overcome these challenges with our 50 years of experience in Singapore, implementation of new technologies including ICT, proactive interaction with local residents over a long period of 8 years, maintain good relationship in cooperation from the client, subcontractors, and the head office. The project of the construction of Upper Thomson Station was recognized as one of the most challenging projects in the TEL and we had successfully completed the project timely, safely and contributed to the further development of Singapore’s subway network.
