【Introduction of the project】

The Thomson-East Coast Line is a MRT project that was implemented to achieve one of Singapore’s policies of ‘keeping the nearest station from the place of residence and work within a 10min walk of an MRT station’. The route starts from Changi International Airport at the eastern end of Singapore, goes along the east coast toward the center of Singapore, head north from near the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, pass through the business district and downtown area, and connect residential areas at the northern end. It is a new MRT line of approximate 50km including 33 stations. The construction site locates overlooking the sea from the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The reclamation at this area started from around 1974. Since then, construction of reservoirs, tourist facilities and highways has been executed, and the MRT line just opened on 13 November 2022. The characteristics of this project are as follows: (1) The underground station structure required extremely high quality in consideration of civil defense. (2) TBMs excavated through the im-proved ground (approximately 2 x 283m). (3) The ground improvement of the foundation of the reservoir revetment located just above the tunnels was carried out by “Navigational inclined drill-ing” from a place away from the reservoir so as not to pollute the water quality of the reservoir. With strong support from Japanese skilled workers and Japanese specialist contractors, we were able to complete the project within the construction schedule, achieve a record of more than 6.26 million consecutive hours without accidents, and receive high praise from client. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved.
